Larry Rost May 27 1988 Age 50, Houston
Information acquired by Brandon Wolf: Larry Rost was a competitive Canadian figure skater who landed in Houston. He taught figure skating at the Winterland Ice Arena (2400 Norfolk) in the 60s and 70s. Winterland was located a block north of the Southwest Freeway and a block east of Kirby, behind about an eight story office building that still stands.
I know he was teaching there as early as January of 1967 because thats where we had my 6th birthday party and I saw him there in his Navy Peacoat.
Anyhow, I ended up being a competitive figure skater myself and Larry was my coach for the first few years. until I went off to Colorado to train. Larry was also the coach for the Houston Figure Skating Club. There was quite a gaggle of us that basically did nothing but go to school and skate. The club would put on a fancy ice show every year and Larry would basically orchestrate the whole thing: theme, music, choreography, sets, costumes (designed and sewn from scratch). It was always very impressive. Then we went off to college and that, as they say, was that. There was obviously much more to those years at the rink, lots of stories, but those are the basics.
